From: Virginia Beach, VA

I worked with BAE Systems in Kingsport, TN for a total of three terms. BAE produces the explosive munitions for our military. My responsibilities as the mechanical engineering intern were mainly with the maintenance of existing production equipment and assisting in the design process for new production lines/ equipment.

I knew that the experience gained from this opportunity would go a long way for my future as a professional in the engineering field. During my time at BAE, I was tasked to help another engineer in designing an elevator platform that could withstand the load of 2-4 tons of material. There was a lack of communication between our team and the production team and the total weight was extremely underestimated. With that, the design we had submitted and was being fabricated was no longer acceptable, however, our team was quick to troubleshoot our errors and devise a fix. The lesson learned in this case was to definitely know all variables before proceeding with your task.

Academically, this experience was beneficial because it gave me the reassurance that the working world is not solely equations and variables, but more so the ability to know when and where to use these tools. Professionally, I was able to be a part of the corporate office environment, so I now have the understanding of the day-to-day workflow of an engineer.

The experience you will receive through this program will be incredibly beneficial to your future and will be well worth your time. Plus, who doesn't love a break from school?!

I enjoy skateboarding, cooking, and video games.
