For my first two rotations, summer and fall 2017, I worked at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a national biofuels research center. I conducted research in and lead services related to the automation and scale-up of synthetic biology experiments
For my assignments at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN (2 rotations, spring and summer 2018; part-time through the 2018-2019 school year), I worked in a computational biology research group and also conducted statistical tests and data analyses on large-scale genomics and systems biology datasets.
My two positions were vastly different from one another, and the switch from an experimental group to a computational group was extremely challenging. The most important lesson I learned was patience. It's ok to struggle for a little bit because everyone has to start somewhere!
I gained so many more skills over this past year, from hard skills like programming a robot and talking to a supercomputer to soft skills such as poster presentations and effective communication. I am much better prepared to tackle whatever comes after undergrad!
Besides all of the skills and techniques I gained, my year of co-op provided me a much-needed break from classes! I feel recharged and ready to continue through all my upcoming years of school!
In my spare time, I enjoy exploring Knoxville, traveling, and coffee!
