I worked as a product design engineer co-op at Altec Industries. Altec is the leading manufacturer of custom utility trucks such as cherry-pickers, digger-derricks, and flatbeds. My job consisted of modeling and designing utility truck bodies, that consist of hundreds of parts and assemblies, in solid works and providing drawings and instructions for assembly on the floor, and making sure the design complies with the truck and lift being used. My project involved redesigning shelves to withstand 500-pound load capacity.

I decided to co-op because I wanted to relate the knowledge gained from school to real world scenarios. I completed ten body designs in my term as a co-op, which means I was the lead design engineer responsible for the body.

My co-op experience with Altec has taught me that engineers must be able to stay calm under pressure and work quickly and efficiently. I am more organized, more on time with assignments; more focused when doing work, and more experienced and confident speaking in front of others and presenting my ideas.

When not studying or working, I work out and travel.

Working as a co-op will be a major highlight in your college career; as a growing experience professionally and personally. To me, this experience has been at least as valuable as the lessons I've learned through my academic studies.
