I performed my co-op with Brasfield & Gorrie General Contractors. They are one of the largest construction companies in the Southeast. I have performed three rotations; one in Nashville, one in Birmingham, AL and one in Lexington, KY. I performed out of their commercial division for all three rotations, taking two terms in project management and one term in the field working with carpenters.
I decided to co-op because I knew it was a great opportunity to see if I was truly interested in working in the construction industry, it gave me practical knowledge in my field of study, and it helped me pay for school without taking out any additional loans.
The biggest achievement of my co-op was during my last term when we were able to get the project open on a very condensed schedule that quite honestly did not seem possible to fulfill. The president of the company came in to town to take the whole project team out to dinner to celebrate and one of the vice presidents who had been actively working on the job made a toast to all of the project management team. He explained each of our roles in completing the job and I was very honored to be mentioned along with everyone else I had worked alongside as being integral in helping get the project open.
Co-op has taught me how to conduct myself professionally while also teaching me structure and planning so that my day is laid out and I have active goals every day I try to achieve.
If you have the chance, do it. Co-oping not only prepares you for your professional life, but it also simulates what life is like after college. I now know what to expect when I enter the real world, and that goes beyond the workplace.
When I have spare time, I love to hunt, fish, play basketball or any sport in general, workout, hang out with my friends, and watch the Titans play on Sundays.
