The Co-op Engineering Program is a way for students to gain professional experience outside of the classroom while still pursuing their undergraduate degree. Students normally work a rotating schedule of at least three work terms with one company, alternating between semesters of full-time work and full-time class. Students generally work at least one fall, spring, and summer term so that they can experience a full year of work at a particular company. The Diversity Engineering Scholarship Program (DESP) is integrated with the Co-op Program and allows eligible students to receive additional benefits. For example, a student’s work and school schedule may be something like this:
All Co-op assignments are paid, and some may include benefits, such as housing and transportation stipends. Co-op differs from internships in that internships are usually not for multiple terms and usually only take place during a certain time of year (the summer). Even with multiple internship experiences with one company, the student does not get an accurate picture of that company because he or she only works there during a certain time of year. With Co-op, students get to see what companies are like year-round. |
